5-a-side 2008

Junior Winners - John White Memorial

Senior Winners - Raphoe

This year's 5-a-side was as competitive as ever, with precious bragging rights for the year ahead at stake, not to mention the two trophies!

Four teams entered the junior competition, and a keenly contested final ended up with John White Memorial triumphing over Straid on penalties.  Such was the excitement after the winning penalty that the scorer was left with a split head after a pile-on by his team mates.  But they build 'em tough in the Shankhill, and he recovered to collect his medal.  Ballycraigy and Ballynahinch deserve a notable mention for their efforts on the day, even though they went out before the final.

The senior competition was where the action really hotted up, with the rivalries between the churches as intense as ever.  As the tournament progressed, each team's individual style was clearly seen:

Abbots Cross - brought a Green and White Army feel, and stamped their brand of physical 'Vinnie Jones'-style football on proceedings

Ballycraigy - showed their German influences by failing to sparkle but still grinding their way to the final

Lisburn - added Brazilian flare and created a carnival atmosphere by bringing along the cheerleading squad

Ballynahinch - once again very competitive, but just failed to make the final

Raphoe - demonstrated that everything's a bit different in Donegal by playing in comedy hats

Straid - failed to score a goal, and resorted to theft of the aforementioned hats...

In a tense final, Raphoe's light-hearted approach defeated a determined Ballycraigy team.  Player of the tournament was Stephen Robinson of Raphoe.

Thanks to the guys from Ballycraigy for their organisation, and to everyone who took part.
